Why do we overeat?

Most of the reasons are connected to emotional distress and habit, a conditioned response most often formed and set-in childhood. Exception to this is people who have diagnosed medical reasons.

Why our programme works?

At Namasté Wellness Retreats, we believe in a holistic approach to weight-loss. Trained professionals will not only design a healthy eating plan and exercise regime for you, but we will also assist you in uncovering your habits and emotional reasons for overeating. Included in the programme you will be given two Wellness Coaching sessions which will equip you with the tools to not only lose weight while you are at the retreat, but more importantly to continue loosing weight when you return home.

Why being overweight leads to disease?

Renowned nutritionist, Patrick Holford, states that “the health risk associated with weighing more than your ideal weight accumulates as soon as you are as little as 3kgs over-weight”.

Obesity is the most common metabolic disorder, with over 50% of South Africans falling into this category. Obesity is a serious medical condition which reduces life expectancy by increasing the risk of many chronic and potentially fatal diseases.

Being overweight is more than just unattractive it predisposes you to the following illnesses:

• Heart conditions: Being overweight places additional burden on the heart and is linked to enlargements. Obesity is linked to coronary artery heart disease and congestive heart failure. Every kilogram you lose is one kilogram less tissue that you heart needs to pump oxygenated blood through.
• Cancer: Excessive eating causes an elevation of oestrogen in the body which has been implicated in the onset of cancer. Obesity is also a risk factor for prostate cancer in men.
• Diabetes: Obesity adversely affects the fat cells so they do not respond properly to insulin. This results in raised blood sugar levels or diabetes in more severe cases. Approximately 80% of adults who develop diabetes are obese.
• Hypertension: The hardening of the arteries occurs more frequently in overweight individuals. Hypertension is a dangerous disease which elevates blood pressure and is linked with sudden death from heart failure.
• Lungs: Additional weight places a burden on the lungs, which results in less oxygen entering the blood stream. This is also a cause of lethargy in overweight individuals.
• Joint deterioration: Obesity is linked to degenerative joint disease caused by additional weight being carried by the skeleton.
• Gall stones: Overweight people, especially women are prone to developing gallstones more often than normal.
